i went back to the domes in casa grande today. not sure this really counts towards 'weird arizona' seeing as i've already posted about these previously, but what the hell...

this place is so awesome. i wish the pictures did it justice. i also got a bunch of pictures of the graffiti inside the domes, which is rad in itself. i will post those in a few days when i get around to editing them.

i only got one 'weird arizona' place checked off today, although i did go back to the domes also (pics to follow later). it's been way too long since i've made any progress on this...

casa grande ruins :: coolidge, az :: 'weird arizona'

about the casa grande ruins: these structures were built by the hohokam in the mid-1300s & were abandoned about a hundred years later. the casa grande (or 'great house') is a massive 4-story structure & its true purpose is completely unknown. however, due to the positioning of the windows in the structure, many believe that it was, at least partially, some sort of astronomical observatory. there are a few other smaller structures on the compound, remains of a farming village, along with a ball court. the casa grande ruins was the first archeological site to be preserved by the federal government & still to this day has not been completely excavated. the current canopy over the casa grande was built in 1932 & has even been nominated to the national register of historic places ("world's largest awning"). ;)
